  Jonathan McQuarry's (Ewan McGregor) profession as an auditor of corporate accounts keeps him working long hours with little time for socializing. When he meets attorney Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman), his life changes. They form a friendship that leads to Jonathan joining a sex club, The List, where he meets "S" (Michelle Williams). Jonathan believes "S" is the woman of his dreams, they go out on a date, and "S" is abducted. Police identify Jonathan as the prime suspect as well of the perpetrator in the theft of $20 million. Could Wyatt be using Jonathan as his pawn in a deadly game?

  Jerry (Shia LaBeouf) has just returned home to Chicago following his twin brother's funeral and discovers thousands of dollars have been deposited in his ATM account. His apartment is filled with military gear, and a phone call warns him to follow instructions or he will be arrested as a terrorist. The FBI arrives at his door, and Jerry is grilled by Agent Thomas Morgan (Billy Bob Thornton). Meanwhile, Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan) has just put her eight-year-old son, Sam (Cameron Boyce), on a train bound for Washington, D.C. where his school band is scheduled to perform at the Kennedy Center. Rachel also receives a phone call from the same stranger telling her to follow directions or Sam will die. The stranger arranges for Rachel and Jerry to get together, and, with Morgan in hot pursuit, they become fugitives desperately trying to find out what is really happening.

Matters grow worse as the anniversary of that fateful day draws near, and another problem from Diana's past enters the picture.
