To relieve the tension, David plays an unmarked videocassette that he finds in the motel room. There is a problem with the cassette: the video appears to have been filmed in David and Amy's motel room and involves frightened guests being tortured and murdered. David and Amy realize that they, too, are being filmed by hidden cameras and that, if they cannot find a means of escape, they are doomed to be the next victims.

As a condition of his parole, Wendell takes a job at the Shady Grove retirement home, which is run by Neil King (Owen Wilson) and McTeague (Eddie Griffin) who run a scam that involves stealing residents' medications and selling them on the black market. A reformed Wendell enlists the aid of the residents–including Boyd (Seymour Cassel), Skip (Harry Dean Stanton), and L.R. Nasher (Kris Kristofferson)–in a plan to end the scam and, maybe, get Doreen back in the process. As they join forces in Wendell's cause, the residents learn that they still have a lot more living to do.
