| | an endearing film for the whole family | findingavoice 01/14/2007 | This is one of those films that lifts one's spirits - - a joy with every viewing. As it explores the stresses within a family it creates a new connection among the principals as a result of the father's effort to save an injured horse and the daughter's love for and belief in both her father and the animal.
Everyone contributes to this cinematic delight, but Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell provide the basic elements that make this unlikely success story a heartwarming experience. The horse is pretty special too. |

| | If you cringe at cruelty, avoid this one | 1fatts 03/13/2007 | The problem may be mine.
I cannot deny that this movie was skillfully made, that the acting was fine (Philip Seymour Hoffman really was as good as they say), that the director had a vision. I understand, then, all the fine reviews this movie got.
But I find cruely - especially cinematic "look how cruel the world is in its black humor way" very difficult to watch. And this movie was ninety minutes of mean: mean spirit, mean actions and anger, all of which was meant that love really does bring redemption, especially if it teachers you how to be meaner than the other SOBs.
I just cringed for what seemed like one of the longest evenings I had spent in a theater for a long time. My friends, who are nearly as old as I and may be given, like me, to a lack of appreciation for the comedy of anguish cringed with me.
Other, younger viewers whose opinion I respect thought it was the funniest thing since Fargo.
So, as I say, maybe it's me. But if you are like me, don't see it. |

FBI Special Agent Jack Crawford's (Jason Statham) partner (Terry Chen) and family are brutally killed in their home, and Crawford sets out for revenge. The killer left a clue–a uranium bullet in a titanium shell–that is the trademark of Japanese assassin Rogue (Jet Li). Crawford's investigation continues for three years, and now he is in charge of the Asian Organized Crime Unit. As Crawford's investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that Rogue is working on both sides in an age-old feud between the Japanese Yakuza boss, Shiro (Ryo Ishibashi), and the Chinese Triad mob leader, Chang (John Lone). Now, Rogue does not appear to be what he seems, and Crawford must figure why Rogue appears to be playing one side against the other.
