When a young girl is murdered in his Paris suburb, middle-aged Monsieur Hire (Michel Blanc) becomes a murder suspect simply because his neighbors are suspicious of his introverted behavior. The police inspector (Andre Wilms) harasses Hire who is now making plans to move away with his neighbor Alice (Sandrine Bonnaire). But, things are not always what they seem to be, and big problems lie ahead for this ill-fated couple.
