Chicago newspaper editor Cooper (Matthew Broderick) was the recipient of a blow to the head that has left him with short-term memory loss. He travels back to his hometown in Missouri to visit his senile Uncle Rollie (Alan Alda), and while there Cooper discovers that Rollie owns a rare Chicago Cubs baseball card. Cooper and Rollie decide to take a road trip back to Chicago with Cooper's high-school ex-girlfriend Charlotte (Virginia Madsen). The reason for the trip is to sell Rollie's baseball card at a memorabilia convention in Chicago where they will meet more than their share of crooked dealers scheming to get their hands on the card and giving as little as possible to Rollie in return.
