  Chicago newspaper editor Cooper (Matthew Broderick) was the recipient of a blow to the head that has left him with short-term memory loss. He travels back to his hometown in Missouri to visit his senile Uncle Rollie (Alan Alda), and while there Cooper discovers that Rollie owns a rare Chicago Cubs baseball card. Cooper and Rollie decide to take a road trip back to Chicago with Cooper's high-school ex-girlfriend Charlotte (Virginia Madsen). The reason for the trip is to sell Rollie's baseball card at a memorabilia convention in Chicago where they will meet more than their share of crooked dealers scheming to get their hands on the card and giving as little as possible to Rollie in return.

Stevens (Martin Lawrence), agrees to head back to Dry Springs, Georgia, for his parents' (James Earl Jones and Margaret Avery) 50th wedding anniversary and family reunion. Jamaal and Rosco's fiancee, TV star Bianca (Joy Bryant), join him for what Rosco hopes will be a chance to convince his relatives that he turned out well, after all. But, Rosco's family members do not accept his super-star attitude and stop at almost nothing to demean him in an effort to make him decide where his real home is.
