During the summer of 1913, Patti (Jane Powell), her sister Melba (Debbie Reynolds), their parents (Louis Calhern and Ann Harding), and her younger brothers (Gary Gray and Tommy Rettig) vacation in the Catskills. At 17, Patti feels that she is old enough to be dating and becomes interested in another resort guest Demi Armendez (Ricardo Montalban). But, Patti's friend Valerie (Phyllis Kirk) is also attracted to Demi and does not stand by and encourage a romance between Patti and Demi. Problems develop, but by story's end all ends happily. This was Debbie Reynolds' second movie, and her rendition of the song "Abba Dabba Honeymoon" hit the charts. 1 User Review

| | A lovely movie if you like old fashioned romance and music | TCM fan 03/31/2012 | I am over 70 so I like old fashioned romances with pretty music. Jane Powell sings beautifully, and Ricardo is very charming as the hero. They do a stunning tango as part of the 'let's put on a show" for the Resort guests. The parents are nice too, and the two boys are likeable and not the usual Hollywood children that you long to strangle. Debbie Reynolds and Carleton Carpenter make an appealing couple, and sing and dance well together.
Incidentally the plot really revolves around Jane (supposedly 17 years old ?) being allowed to wear a CORSET, since it will prove that her mother thinks she is grown up enough to date (Ricardo of course!) This kind of thing was very important to young women in the early 1900's, though I realize that most young people will not know this.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You have Ricardo Montalban incorrectly listed as one of the Robinson family in your cast list. He is correctly listed as Demi Armendez in the synopsis. |
