  The personal life of an All-American football player Nick Bonelli (Tony Curtis) who is the quarterback at Mid-State is the subject of this film. His life changes following the tragic death of his parents in an auto accident while driving to his game. Nick quits football and transfers to Sheridan University. Despite many problems in Nick's life, his girlfriend Sharon (Lori Nelson) comes to Nick's aid and brings him into the fold.

  Following a nuclear disaster, Captain Maddison (Paul Birch) and his daughter Louise (Lori Nelson) are joined by Rick (Richard Denning) in their shelter. They have enough food and supplies for them to survive the amount of time it takes for radiation to abate. But, Maddison has not counted on the arrival of gangster Tony (Mike Connors), his moll Ruby (Adele Jergens), scientist Pete (Raymond Hatton), and radiation victim Radek (Paul Dubov). They form an uneasy alliance and then find themselves in a fight against a three-eyed monster.

Clint Eastwood makes his screen debut in a small part.
