  Busby Berkeley's musical numbers highlight this entertaining film about what goes on behind the scenes of the Broadway musical show, "Pretty Lady." When the show's temperamental star, Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels) breaks her ankle on the night of the show's opening, chorus girl Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler) fills in and takes over the lead. Featured numbers include" "You're getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Shuffle off to Buffalo," and "42nd Street." The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

  This is the third–and final–"Gold Diggers" film, and Busby Berkeley, though not in the director's chair for this one, still handled the choreography. This time around, unemployed chorus girls Genevieve Larkin (Glenda Farrell) and Norma Perry (Joan Blondell) are in on a plot to buy insurance from Rosmer Peak (Dick Powell) to insure J.J. Horbart (Victor Moore) in order to make money when he dies. Meanwhile, Horbart's partners lost his money in the stock market, and he has no money to finance his next Broadway show. Now, Genevieve falls in love with Horbart who suffers a breakdown when he learns that he is broke. The only way to restore Horbart's health is to put on the show without financial backing. And the show goes on.

  Mary Dwight (Bette Davis) works at a nightclub, owned by mob boss Johnny Vanning (Eduardo Ciannelli), where she performs as a hostess and prostitute. After one of the customers is killed, Mary swears to turn states evidence to help prosecutor David Graham (Humphrey Bogart). But when she appears in court, Mary clams up. Later her sister Betty (Jane Bryan) joins the group and is killed by a gangster for not submitting to his advances. Mary again threatens to testify but is beaten and scarred for life. Finally, from her hospital bed, she begs fellow prostitutes to testify. The five women–including Mary–appear in court, testify, and help bring Vanning to his knees.

Now, Al's girlfriend Allison (Alice White) falls for Danny, but he falls in love with Patricia (Patricia Ellis) who happens to be the daughter of police Lt. Casey Nolan (Robert Emmett O'Connor) who had put him in jail. Danny continues to get unique pictures, including one of a woman dying in the electric chair that was facilitated by Casey. Problems develop when one of Danny's former gang members (Ralf Harolde) enters the scene, but Danny manages to save the day. Fast paced and has its funny moments.

  Former Army Captain Stephen Jameson (Pat O'Brien) is hired by San Quentin prison to bring military order to the rowdy yard. Meanwhile, he falls for May (Ann Sheridan) but keeps his occupation a secret from her when she tells him that her brother Joe "Red" Kennedy (Humphrey Bogart) is a prisoner at San Quentin. When "Red" learns about the romance from stoolie "Sailor Boy" Hansen (Joe Sawyer), he plots his escape. It works, and he appears at May's apartment and shoots at and wounds Jameson–only to be gunned down on his way to surrender.

A fine, funny flick.
