But throughout his assignment, William's mother (Frances McDormand) calls him often and warns him to stay away from drugs. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay; both Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand were nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

They follow the trail and steal the gold. But, in the process, they discover the consequences of America's policies in the Middle East when the U.S. encouraged civilians to rise up against Hussein. Those civilians now face execution, and the U.S. refuses to help. "The Three Kings" must decide whether or not to help the civilians get out of Kuwait–an effort that may entail losing their cache of gold.
