  This story begins with New York real estate heir David Marks (Ryan Gosling) testifying about his missing wife, Katie (Kirsten Dunst). Through flashbacks, the story is told of David meeting Katie and being told by his father, Sanford Marks (Frank Langella), that Katie will never be accepted into their high-society world. David does marry Katie, but all does not end happily, and, after she disappears, David is suspected of her murder. Based on the real life story of Robert Durst.

  In the early 1970s, aspiring journalist, San Diego high school student William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is given the choice assignment of writing a "Rolling Stone" article about the rising rock band Stillwater. William joins the band's "Almost Famous" tour, befriends guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and lead singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee), falls in love with "band aid" Elaine (Kate Hudson), and sees the real world. But throughout his assignment, William's mother (Frances McDormand) calls him often and warns him to stay away from drugs. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay; both Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand were nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

  Following the Persian Gulf War, U.S. soldiers–Archie Gates (George Clooney), Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg), and Chief Elgin (Ice Cube)–set out as "Three Kings" determined to retrieve $23 million in gold that Saddam Hussein reputedly stole from Kuwait. They follow the trail and steal the gold. But, in the process, they discover the consequences of America's policies in the Middle East when the U.S. encouraged civilians to rise up against Hussein. Those civilians now face execution, and the U.S. refuses to help. "The Three Kings" must decide whether or not to help the civilians get out of Kuwait–an effort that may entail losing their cache of gold.
