They travel by steamer, train, and on foot with other emigrants to find a new home on the fertile land of Minnesota. The film received Academy Award nominations as Best Foreign Film, Picture, Actress (Ullmann), Director, and Writing.

Eva obliges, but more traumas and shame follow until Eva and Jan leave their home hoping for shelter on another island nearby.
