In 1780 the British thought they had a stronghold on South Carolina, but guerilla activities helped to confuse Cornwallis as he squandered his strength chasing American forces across the area. The famous "Swamp Fox" Francis Marion understood the role of a guerilla force and proceeded to snap up, one by one, the British posts that Cornwallis had carefully set up in South Carolina. In this rewrite of history, "Swamp Fox" is transformed into the "Ghost," Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), widower and father of seven children. Another history rewrite takes place in the perception of slavery: slaves seem happy to serve their masters. In reality, in the South more than 10,000 African Americans supported the British forces and were relocated to Nova Scotia, Florida, Jamaica, and Africa at the end of the war. But if you are looking for rousing action and great special effects–and are willing to go along with the premise that the American Revolution was won because Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) led the guerrillas against the evil British (especially Col. William Tavington (Jason Isaacs))–then this movie will prove entertaining.
