Camille tries to leave Armand, but Armand pursues and supports Camille even as she lies dying from tuberculosis. Based on Alexandre Dumas' novel, this is also the story that Verdi used for "La Traviata."

Years later her son (Raymond Hackett), not knowing who she is, defends her on a murder charge. This is the first film to utilize a moving microphone (attached to a fishing pole). The film received Oscar nominations for Best Actress (Chatterton) and Director.

But, one night Hamilton seduces Sadie, and then his guilt causes him to commit suicide. This allows Sadie to reunite with Tim, and they prepare to begin a new life together. Swanson received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Complications arise with future in-laws' acceptance of each others' families–especially when Tony's parents show up one day early. The film received the Oscar for Best Picture. An Academy Award was also won by Frank Capra as Best Director, and the film received five other nominations, including Spring Byington for Best Supporting Actress.

He gets in trouble right away when he is blamed for the death of an important politician. The wheel-chair-bound Dr. Gillespie helps prove Kildare's innocence and, by story's end, becomes his mentor.
