Advertising executive Sam Bissell (Jack Lemmon) is happily married to Minerva (Dorothy Provine) when he helps out his neighbor, Janet (Romy Schneider), by pretending to be her husband so she can inherit $15 million. Janet is married but separated from Howard (Mike Connors) and does not want to share the inheritance with him. Many complications arise when Sam's biggest client, Simon Nurdlinger (Edward G. Robinson), uses Sam and Janet as "the ideal married couple" in an ad campaign and features their pictures on billboards throughout the town.
