This poignant story is the third filming of Edna Ferber's epic novel about a schoolteacher, Selina (Jane Wyman), who, after the death of her husband Pervus (Sterling Hayden), turns to farming for survival in order to raise their young son Dirk (Tommy Rettig). Her vegetable business prospers, and Dirk (now played by Steve Forrest) graduates from college. But, problems ensue when Paula (Martha Hyer) enters Dirk's life.
