Ten-year-old Tre's (Desi Arnez Hines II) divorced mother Reva (Angela Bassett) allows Tre's father Furious (Larry Fishburne) to raise him as a loving, but stern, father. When Tre (now played by Cuba Cooding Jr.) grows up and attends high school, his friends Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) have not been as lucky, but Ricky is offered a football scholarship to USC. South-central Los Angeles in the 1980s and 1990s is a war zone, and this offer provides Ricky the opportunity to escape from the neighborhood. Tre is also college bound, but when a gang attacks Tre and Ricky, Doughboy sets out to seek revenge while Tre must decide what he really wants to do with his life.
