The film highlights the life and times of people during the Depression and is unusual in that nearly all dialogue is written in rhyme. The music of Rodgers and Hart is excellent. Some versions are edited.

Three episodes are told: Valjean's arrest for stealing a loaf of bread and his imprisonment, Valjean's hounding by Javert after becoming mayor and adopting a girl (Debra Paget), and Javert's cessation of the pursuit of Valjean.

The rest of the trip proves to be anything but a paradise when First Mate Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando) leads the Bounty crew in mutiny. Excellent scenery and music. Seven Academy Award nominations were received, including Best Picture.

They are hired by rancher Jackson (Oscar O'Shea) but have problems with Jackson's son Curley (Bob Steele). Curley's wife Mae (Betty Field) flirts with Lennie, and, while consoling him over the death of a pet rabbit, Lennie accidentally strangles Mae, which leads to a tragic end.
