This sequel to "Knock on Any Door" has drug addict widow Nellie Romano (Shelley Winters) living on skid row on Chicago's South Side and determined to make her son Nick (James Darren) a pianist. His father was sentenced to the electric chair, and Nellie does not want Nick to suffer the same fate. But, despite the influence of judge Bruce Mallory Simpson (Burl Ives), the neighborhood they live in will make Nellie's task difficult.
