Three generations of women have difficulties communicating as each has her own set of problems within the Chinese culture. Twenty years ago, Kim (Bai Ling) was raped and became pregnant as a result. According to Chinese tradition, she married baby Genie's father. The marriage failed, and Kim left Genie in the care of her mother (Kieu Chinh). Now, Kim has returned to visit and finds Genie (Kristy Wu) dating a Black DJ (Anthony "Treach" Criss), which goes against Chinese tradition. The three women now struggle to find a common thread in their lives.
