This film is an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel about California migrant workers during the Great Depression. George (Burgess Meredith) and his cousin Lennie (Lon Chaney Jr.) are workers dreaming of a better life; however, Lennie is mentally retarded, and George cannot always protect Lennie from himself. They are hired by rancher Jackson (Oscar O'Shea) but have problems with Jackson's son Curley (Bob Steele). Curley's wife Mae (Betty Field) flirts with Lennie, and, while consoling him over the death of a pet rabbit, Lennie accidentally strangles Mae, which leads to a tragic end.
