Based on Matt Crowley's Broadway play concerning the subject of homosexuality, this is the story of Harold's (Leonard Frey) birthday party at Michael's (Kenneth Nelson) apartment. All of the party attendees are gay. But, just before the party begins, Michael's old college friend Alan (Peter White) appears for a visit. Alan is straight, and Michael warns the others to mind their manners. The alcohol drinking begins, the group celebrates, and the games get out of hand as the guests reveal previously unspoken revelations about themselves.

Meanwhile, Chava wants to marry Fyedka (Ray Lovelock) who is a not Jewish. While Tevye disapproves of their choices and has tried to arrange more "proper" marriages, he is forced finally to change his way of thinking when the anti-Semitic Czar forces his family and their Jewish neighbors out of their village. The film won three Academy Awards (Best Cinematography, Music, and Sound) and was nominated for five others–including Best Picture, Actor (Topol), Director, and Supporting Actor (Frey).
