In this made-for-TV film, wealthy Tony Wendice (Christopher Plummer) arranges to have his wife Margot (Angie Dickinson) murdered. But, Margot fights off her attempted murderer and kills him. When Tony tells the police that it was a case of premeditated murder, Margot is found guilty and sentenced to hang. Now, it is up to police Inspector Hubbard (Anthony Quayle) to get to the bottom of the mystery and save Margot's life. Director Boris Sagal uses some of Alfred Hitchcock's touches and makes this film enjoyable.

The time is the 19th century when H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) invents a time machine, which Jack the Ripper (David Warner) uses to escape to modern-day San Francisco. H.G. follows Jack in an attempt to bring Jack back to the past. H.G. meets and falls in love with bank officer Amy Robbins (Mary Steenburgen) who acts as his guide. H.G. now hopes for a utopian existence, but Jack continues his activities as a serial killer.
