Clifton Webb takes on the role of John Philip Sousa whose march tunes are woven into the script of this enjoyable biography of the leader of the United States Marine Corps Band from the Marine Corps' early days through the Spanish-American War. Sousa meets Private Willie Little (Robert Wagner), the inventor of the Sousaphone, and Willie's girlfriend Lily (Debra Paget) and forms his own band, which includes Willie and Lily, and their romance becomes a big part of the story.
