  Mike Enslin (John Cusack) makes a living writing about the supernatural, but he does not believe in ghosts–until he checks out room 1408 of Manhattan's Dolphin Hotel. Despite warnings from the hotel manager, Mr. Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), who tells Mike that the room will never be available because 56 people have died after checking into the suite, Mike forces Mr. Olin to rent him the room. Once in room 1408, Mike encounters a host of otherworldly faces, or are the horrors all in his mind? And, even more important, will Mike survive the night?

His mission: stop the impending marriage of his daughter Jeannie (Hope Davis) to Randall Hertzel (Dermot Mulroney), a man Warren can't stand. Once he arrives at the Hertzel home, Warren meets a family–including Roberta and Larry (Kathy Bates and Howard Hesseman)–unlike any he has ever known. Things get really tight when Nick dumps Anne for a younger woman (Bess Armstrong). Alda wrote, directed, and stars in this comedy.
