The customers come, and the story revolves around women's obsessions with shopping and clothing, which are revealed when customers confess their uncontrolled shopping habits–all this and a possible romance for Holly in the form of the boyfriend (Rob Morrow) of one of the shoppers as director Henry Jaglom again deals with subjects of women and their obsessions. "Eating" (1990) and and "Babyfever" (1994) are Jaglom's previous films on these obsessions.

  This film is based on the true story of Jewish refugees–including countess Denise (Faye Dunaway) and her husband Professor Egon Kreisler (Oscar Werner) and disbarred attorney Carl Rosen (Sam Wanamaker), his wife Lili (Lee Grant), and daughter Anna (Lynne Frederick). In 1939, they and other passengers sail from Europe looking for freedom. Their ship is not allowed to dock in ports in the Western Hemisphere, and the voyage proves fruitless when they are forced to return to Germany. Lee Grant received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
