In this follow-up to the TV series, the alien "Newcomers" from the planet Tencton and humans coexist in L.A. Meanwhile, the "Purists" have developed a virus to infect them. Detective George Francisco (Eric Pierpoint) who is a Tencton and his partner Matthew Sikes (Gary Graham) investigate. But more problems arise when Ahpossno (Scott Patterson) is sent from Tencton to capture the "Newcomers" and take them back to a world of slavery.

There is a flaw in the design of the spaceship, and as a means of protecting the reputation of NASA, mission controller Dr. James Kelloway (Hal Holbrook) stages a Mars landing that is never meant to take place. The astronauts–(James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, and Sam Waterston)–are removed from the spaceship before it is launched and taken to a studio where they must pretend to be on the journey to Mars. But, journalist Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould) becomes suspicious and investigates the conspiracy, which will go so far as to end the astronauts' lives as the means of keeping the hoax a secret.

As the trip proceeds, the twin theme continues to come up as they visit Sigrid's old family cottage and run across Red's brother more than once.
