  Professional football fills the screen in Oliver Stone's depiction of the sport's violent struggles brought on by the pressure of winning. Miami Sharks quarterback Cap Rooney (Dennis Quaid) is injured, and Coach Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino) pulls Willie Beamen (Jamie Foxx) off the bench to replace him. Willie excels and becomes a star player, which gives the new owner of the Sharks, Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz), the incentive to place pressures on D'Amato to win at any cost.

When Dean's (Jamie Bell) friend commits suicide, Dean is bullied to locate his missing drugs and hand them over. The ploy fails, and a kidnapping is opted for, but the wrong child is kidnapped. Left to solve the problem are parents who appear incapable of dealing with the situation, and the Chumscrubber comes to the fore.
