This psychological study of the effects of war on children revolves around a five-year-old French girl, Paulette (Brigitte Fossey), who witnesses the killing of her parents and pet dog by German soldiers during World War II. Eleven-year-old Michel Dolle (Georges Poujouly) brings Paulette to his family home, and the two children create a pet cemetery for animals killed in the war. They steal crosses from a nearby human cemetery to mark the animals' graves. Michel's parents are too busy with their own lives to notice what the children are doing in this story of how war causes children to find unique ways to deal with it. The film won an Honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

Matters are further complicated by Helene's troubled stepson who suffers from his own memory problems–and then there is Alphonse's 20-year-old lover Francoise (Nita Klein). The use of montage, overlapping dialogue, and photography provide a haunting quality to this story of attempting to reach an accord between memories and the present.

In "Super Simone" a wife uses unique methods to get the attention of her husband (Lex Barker). "At the Opera" features a Parisian woman who will stop at nothing to own a particular designer gown. In "Suicide Pacts," a woman and her lover (Alan Arkin) make a suicide pact. Finally, in "Snow," a woman's husband hires a private detective (Michael Caine) to spy on her.
