Based on Jim Thompson's "A Swell Looking Babe," this is the story of a hapless bellhop, Sonny (Elias Koteas), whose home life is just as miserable as what he endures at the two-star Stillwell Hotel. One night he agrees to join his friend Del (Bruce Ramsay) in a plot to rob the safe, which holds $500,000 for an illegal poker game. Of course, the best-laid plans go awry and result in only adding to Sonny's grief.
