Star Trek: The Cage   1965     3 stars  User Rating      TV, 70 min.
Genre: Sci-Fi / Adventure
Director: Robert Butler
Cast: Jeffrey Hunter, Leonard Nimoy, Susan Oliver, Majel Barrett, John Hoyt, Peter Duryea, Laurel Goodwin, Michael Dugan, Robert Phillips, Ed Madden, Jon Lormer, Leonard Mudie, Janos Prohaska, Bob Johnson, Joseph Mell

This is the pilot for the original series; it was rejected by the network and was thus made over with a new cast, with Leonard Nimoy being the only major player to remain. Parts of this pilot were used in the two-part episode "The Menagerie," which brought back Enterprise's first captain, Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), and again was set in Talos IV. This episode was released in 1986. Pike leads a landing party to Talos IV to investigate a distress signal and is captured by the highly intelligent inhabitants who are able to manipulate the mind through illusions. Now Spock and the rest of Enterprise's crew must figure out how to save the day.    1 User Review

A must see classic Star Trek adventure.
More a journey of the mind then a visual cascade of today's sci fi stories.
It really does stand alone quite well as a work of provocative entertainment.
Star Trek: The Cage and the resulting 3 season of the original series are STAR TREK, PERIOD.

No to be confused with any of the bland spin off series that where to follow later.
