An ordinary beagle (voice of Jason Lee) gets a dose of mad scientist Simon Barsinister's (Peter Dinklage) potion, escapes the lab, and then is taken in by widower Don Unger (James Belushi) and his depressed son Jack (Alex Neuberger) who name him Shoeshine because he likes to lick shoes. Shoeshine adjusts happily to his new home, but Barsinister's potion has turned him into a dog with super powers. When Dan encourages him to use those powers for a worthy cause, Shoeshine dons a suit and cape and turns into Underdog vowing to protect the citizens of Capitol City–including, of course, that particular spaniel Polly Purebread (voice of Amy Adams).
