Something strange is happening in the U.S.S.R. submarine force: the CIA suspects that one of its submarine captains, Commander Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), is leading his submarine, Red October, on a mission that will start World War III. The U.S. Navy knows the submarine is headed their way, but they can only surmise why. Only one person, CIA operative Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), comes up with another reason for the mission of Red October. He believes that Ramius is planning to defect and is assigned the job of going out there to find out what is really going on.
