But, their new-found happiness results in more than a few conflicts between the survivors. Musical production numbers with songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David are interspersed with the drama.

After Rio's (Marlon Brando) partner Dad Longworth (Karl Malden) deserts him during a bank robbery, Rio is caught by the sheriff and sent to prison. Five years later, after breaking out of prison, Rio sets out to track down Longworth and seek revenge. He finds Longworth and learns that he is now sheriff in a small town, is married to Maria (Katy Jurado), and has a stepdaughter Louisa (Pina Pellicer). As part of his plot, Rio seduces Louisa. Then, he falls in love with her but continues his criminal life, and complications ensue.
