Larry Valentine (Kevin James) is a widower working as a New York City firefighter when he is told that only a spouse can claim life insurance benefits. This leaves his children out in the cold. As a solution, Larry and his fellow firefighter Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler), who just happens to be a womanizer, take part in a mock marriage to beat the system. After the fire department sends an inspector (Steve Buscemi) to investigate the "marriage," Chuck and Larry hire a lawyer, Alex McDonough (Jessica Biel). Alex believes their story and recommends that they go to Canada where they can be legally wed because in Canada gay marriage is legal. And, of course, gay jokes prevail throughout the film.
