  Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) is a young ballerina whose isolated lifestyle revolves around her dancing. Her retired ballerina mother, Erica (Barbara Hershey), is consumed with Nina becoming a ballet star. When director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) replaces Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) and chooses Nina for the role of the Swan queen, problems await. Competition between Nina and Lily (Mila Kunis), who takes the role of the Black Swan, ensues, and Nina's dark side rises to the fore as the real world becomes confused with Nina's imagination. Natalie Portman won an Oscar for Best Actress.
