With support from her editor Bonnie Benjamin (Angela Bassett), Washington, D.C., political journalist Rachel Armstrong (Kate Beckinsale) reveals the name of covert CIA agent Erica Van Doren (Vera Farmiga) in her story about a government scandal. When she refuses to reveal her source, U.S. District Court Judge Hall (Floyd Abrams) throws Rachel into jail for contempt of court, and her legal struggles begin as U.S. attorney Patton Dubois (Matt Dillon) pressures her to reveal her source. Rachel's attorney, Albert Burnside (Alan Alda), cites her First Amendment rights as he pleads her case. Meanwhile, Rachel spends one year in jail where she is beaten up by the inmates and is alienated from her husband Ray (David Schwimmer) but, through it all, maintains her integrity.

Erik (Josh Hartnett) worked as a sports reporter for the Denver Times but is not regarded highly at the office. His estranged wife Joyce (Kathryn Morris) is an esteemed editor for the same paper, and the new editor-in-chief, Metz (Alan Alda), is not a fan of Erik's work. Erik is concerned about his personal life and tries to be a hero to his six-year-old son Teddy (Dakota Goyo) by making up stories about his relationships with sports heroes. Then one day Erik finds a homeless man (Samuel L. Jackson) stumbling in the alley after a beating. He tells Erik that he is the former boxing champion "Battling" Bob Satterfield. Now Erik has a purpose in life to tell the story of this fallen sports hero, and while dedicating himself to writing an honest story, Erik re-examines his professional and personal lives and improves them both.
