| | an endearing film for the whole family | findingavoice 01/14/2007 | This is one of those films that lifts one's spirits - - a joy with every viewing. As it explores the stresses within a family it creates a new connection among the principals as a result of the father's effort to save an injured horse and the daughter's love for and belief in both her father and the animal.
Everyone contributes to this cinematic delight, but Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell provide the basic elements that make this unlikely success story a heartwarming experience. The horse is pretty special too. |

As a condition of his parole, Wendell takes a job at the Shady Grove retirement home, which is run by Neil King (Owen Wilson) and McTeague (Eddie Griffin) who run a scam that involves stealing residents' medications and selling them on the black market. A reformed Wendell enlists the aid of the residents–including Boyd (Seymour Cassel), Skip (Harry Dean Stanton), and L.R. Nasher (Kris Kristofferson)–in a plan to end the scam and, maybe, get Doreen back in the process. As they join forces in Wendell's cause, the residents learn that they still have a lot more living to do.
