When the rednecks are brought to court, Carl appears with a rifle and kills the defendants. Carl's friend, lawyer Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughy), agrees to defend him and receives help from young law clerk Ellen Roark (Sandra Bullock). Meanwhile, the situation gets out of control, and, as the KKK, led by Freddie Lee Cobb (Kiefer Sutherland) rises to the fore, Jake finds himself in grave danger.
