A young U.S. Navy attorney, Ltjg. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), has virtually no courtroom experience, but he is about to learn that there is more to the legal system than plea-bargaining when he is assigned a murder case at the Marine Corps base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. LCdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore) is assigned as co-counsel, and she urges Kaffee to look at the law as an exciting field in which to discover truth. Kaffee's case involves two Marines–Pfc. Downey (James Marshall) and Cpl. Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison)–who are accused of murdering a fellow Marine. Kaffee follows Galloway's instructions to look for the truth, and, under questioning, Downey and Dawson reveal that the murder was ordered by Lt. Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland). Kendrick's senior officer Col. Nathan Jessup (Jack Nicholson) denies any knowledge of Kendrick issuing the order and wants the investigation stopped. Now, Kaffee is determined to find the proof behind the allegations even if it means going head-to-head with tough Col. Jessup.
