He also introduces Christian to Satine (Nicole Kidman). Christian falls in love, but Satine is promised to the wealthy Duke of Montroth (Richard Roxburgh) who just happens to be financing the show. Complications ensue amidst dazzling musical numbers. The film received eight Academy Award nominations and won for Best Costume Design and Art Direction. Nominations included Best Picture and Actress (Nicole Kidman).

Ada, a mute, has found that she can express herself through her piano. Another man, George Baines (Harvey Keitel) comes to the rescue, and his actions also lead to complications. Holly Hunter won an Academy Award For Best Actress, and Anna Paquin won for Best Supporting Actress. Five other nominations were received, including Best Picture and Director.
