U.S. prisoners of war in Vietnam call their prison "the Hanoi Hilton," and, despite enduring torture, American prisoner Col. Cathcart (Lawrence Pressman) insists that his fellow prisoners adhere to protocol. When the head of the prison orders Cathcart to be dragged off and tortured, Lt. Cdr. Williamson (Michael Moriarty) assumes leadership of the prisoners and tries to enforce Cathcart's discipline. But, the prisoners do resist and form strong bonds that continue throughout their years in prison.
