  Pam (Sissy Spacek) reads her Connecticut newspaper and discovers that her high-school boyfriend, Russell (David Strathairn), is on death row for killing a policeman. Despite husband Keith's (Arliss Howard) objections, Pam makes many visits to Russell's South Carolina jail. While searching for a legal avenue that will lead to his freedom, Pam learns that Russell suffers from post-traumatic shock syndrome after fighting in the Vietnam War. An appeal is made, and it fails. As the execution date nears, tensions mount in the relationship of Pam and Keith.

Everything changes when a strange moss is caught in Cody's net, and Cody discovers that the moss has magical powers, which allow it to perform miracles. Cody is relieved when he sees that the powers affect not only the Brewer family but bring good things for the whole community as well.
