  Giant leeches are living in the swamp, and there is good reason to believe they are responsible for the disappearance of four people, especially when a dying moonshiner, Lem Sawyer (George Cisar), is found with sucker wounds. Game Warden Steve Benton (Ken Clark) and his girlfriend Nan's (Jan Shepard) father, Doc Greyson (Tyler McVey), investigate and learn that leeches are living in caves beneath the swamp. Will dynamite rid the area of those monster leeches?

  During World War II, a spoiled Southern landowner, Pvt. Sam Gifford (Robert Wagner), leaves Jenny (Terry Moore) behind to fight in the Pacific. After experiencing problems with his National Guard unit, Sam is transferred to a disciplinary battalion under the command of cruel Captain "Waco" Grimes (Broderick Crawford). Sam makes friends with sharecropper Pvt. Willie Crawford (Buddy Ebsen) from whom he learns much about the error of his Southern prejudices. During a battle with the Japanese, Sam saves Willie's life, and he gains inner strength and the knowledge that he has become a better man.

  This film represents Elvis Presley's first starring role. The story begins in Texas near the end of the Civil War when Clint Reno (Presley), who is not serving in the war, consoles his brother Vance's (Richard Egan) girlfriend Cathy (Debra Paget) after they get word that Vance has been killed in the war. Cathy and Clint marry, but Vance, who had not been killed, returns home and is dismayed when he learns of the marriage. Vance had been involved in a train robbery and had stolen a Union payroll. When he decides to return the money, Clint sets out after him, and a shootout ensues. Songs include "Love Me Tender," "Let Me," and "Poor Boy."
