  While stationed in London, American government employee Dr. Lauren Slaughter (Sigourney Weaver) decides to increase her income by performing as an "escort service" in her spare time. All goes well until she meets Lord Sam Bulbeck (Michael Caine), and they form a bond. Unbeknownst to Lauren, she becomes a pawn in Lord Bulbeck's dealings with a powerful group of wealthy Arabs when wealthy sheik Karim Hatami (Nadim Sawalha) showers her with attention and gifts.

  While serving as an American bomber pilot during World War II, David Halloran (Harrison Ford) is in England where he meets and falls in love with Margaret Sellinger (Lesley-Anne Down) during an air raid. Margaret keeps the fact that she is married a secret. Later, David goes on a mission with British secret service agent Paul (Christopher Plummer)–who just happens to be Margaret's husband. After their plane is shot down over France, David realizes that Paul's wife is Margaret, but they must work together if they are going to find the means for survival.

  The generation gap of the Crompton family in Lancashire is presented through the eyes of both parents and children when young Hilda (Susan George) refuses to eat her herring and her father Rafe (James Mason) becomes irate. Because of Hilda's behavior, Rafe begins to serve her herring every day at tea time. Rafe's wife Daisy (Diana Coupland) is so upset with his behavior that she tries to get money for Hilda to move away to London. Rafe is also upset when his daughter Florence (Hannah Gordon) falls in love. And the problems continue as Rafe is determined to rule his household.
