This is a remake of 1931's "An American Tragedy," which is the title of Theodore Dreiser's story. The film won six Academy Awards, including one for Best Director (George Stevens), and nominations were received for Best Picture, Actor (Montgomery Clift), and Actress (Shelley Winters).
