Retarded 11-year-old Karl had killed his mother and her lover with a sling blade when misunderstanding their sexual encounter and was institutionalized. Now, 25 years later, Karl (Billy Bob Thornton) is released from the institution and is at loose ends. He opts to move into the dysfunctional household of his new friend, young Frank Wheatley (Lucas Black), where he views actions of family members through an outsider's perspective. Billy Bob Thornton received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and won an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
