Carl Buckley (Broderick Crawford) works for John Owens (Grandon Rhodes) on the Rock Island Railroad, and when he finds his wife Vicki (Gloria Grahame) with John on a train, Carl kills John. An off-duty train engineer, Jeff Warren (Glenn Ford), witnesses the murder but does not report what he has seen. Now, Jeff and Vickie begin an affair, and Vicki plots with Jeff to kill Carl.
