After escaping from a concentration camp in Nazi Germany, Dr. Ravic (Anthony Hopkins) arrives in Paris and sets out to seek revenge against his former prison guard Haake (Donald Pleasence). One night, he prevents Joan Madou (Lesley-Anne Down) from committing suicide, and the two begin a passionate, but ill-fated, love affair in which both hide secrets from the other.

Winston Churchill was out of power and was a lone voice trying to warn the population and leadership of the threat posed by Hitler's re-arming of Germany. He returned to power after his warnings were proven to be valid.
