Daisy (Natalie Wood) becomes a 15-year-old, 1930s' movie star after her mentally unstable mother (Ruth Gordon) enters her in a talent-search contest, but by age 17, her time in the limelight has passed. In her quest to regain popularity, Daisy goes to the extreme of marrying popular film idol Wade Lewis (Robert Redford) who she sees only as a means to an end. The marriage lasts only one day, and a short time later Daisy suffers a nervous breakdown. Now, Daisy must decide if she really wants the fame associated with stardom or if she should leave Hollywood.
