Although her husband, Janos (Ivan Darvas), is being held by the Hungarian government as a political prisoner and not knowing whether he is dead or alive, Luca (Mari Torocsik) lives with his aging, bedridden mother Az (Lili Darvas). Luca reads to her mother-in-law letters that she has written that are supposedly written by Janos from New York where Az believes that he is directing a film. The ploy works and keeps up the old woman's spirits as the two women form a special bond.
