  Based on Robert Stone's award-winning novel "Dog Soldiers," this story begins with Marine Corps combat veteran John Converse (Michael Moriarty) returning to Vietnam as a journalist and deciding to smuggle heroin into the United States. Merchant Marine sailor Ray Hicks (Nick Nolte) delivers the drugs to John's wife Marge (Tuesday Weld) in California, but then thugs–Smitty and Danskin (Ray Sharkey and Richard Mazur)–steal the drugs. It isn't long before Ray and Marge are on the lam–with crooked narcotics agent Antheil (Anthony Zerbe) close behind.
